A powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck offshore near Vanuatu on Saturday, October 24, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake occurred in the South Pacific near the island nation, a region that experiences frequent strong seismic activity along tectonic plate boundaries.

The earthquake prompted a tsunami warning for nearby areas. That warning was subsequently lifted, and the U.S. Tsunami Warning Centers bulletin listed no tsunami warning, advisory, watch, or threat in effect. Residents should always follow local emergency instructions if conditions change.

The Associated Press reported a series of aftershocks, including one with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3. Early earthquake magnitudes are subject to revision as scientists analyze additional seismic data. There were no immediate reports of significant damage in the initial reporting.

Vanuatu sits near an active plate boundary where one section of Earth’s crust moves beneath another. These subduction zones can produce major earthquakes. Texas News Studio will continue monitoring significant earthquakes and official tsunami information.
