FBI and CISA Warn of Cyberattacks Against Refrigeration Systems Protecting Food and Medicine
Federal agencies say exposed refrigeration controllers could be manipulated to spoil food or compromise temperature-sensitive supplies.

A multi-agency US warning issued November 5 focuses on the connected equipment that keeps food, medical supplies and other sensitive materials at controlled temperatures. Attackers have been targeting industrial refrigeration and cold-chain monitoring systems.
The concern is not simply stolen information. If a controller can be reached and manipulated remotely, a refrigerator or freezer may be forced into a defrost cycle or unsafe temperature range. That can destroy inventory, damage equipment and create safety hazards.
The advisory followed incidents in European retail stores and healthcare facilities. Officials urged operators to identify exposed controllers, remove unnecessary internet access, update software and protect remote logins.
The warning does not mean US grocery chains or hospitals have all been compromised. It is a preventive alert about a demonstrated class of attack.
