One of Poland’s best-known public squares became the scene of a deadly attack Saturday, leaving six people dead and a nation in mourning. Authorities said a 24-year-old man drove into Kraków’s Main Square and opened fire.
The Associated Press reported that 15 people were wounded in the attack before police shot and wounded the suspected gunman. Two police officers were among those injured. The suspect was hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigators also found three family members dead at the suspect’s home. Police recovered multiple firearms, and prosecutors began examining the square shooting as a possible act of terrorism. Authorities described the suspect’s views as radical and ultranationalist, but the investigation remains ongoing.
The location made the violence particularly shocking. Kraków’s historic center is a place of tourism, commerce and public gatherings, not a setting associated with mass shootings. The attack prompted mourning and renewed questions about the spread of extremist ideas.
The victims and their families are the central story. Questions about ideology and failures of prevention matter, but they should be answered by evidence gathered during the investigation—not by speculation or collective blame.
