The ground did not have to shake beneath a major city to get attention. Far off the Northern California coast, another earthquake has reminded residents just how restless this stretch of the Pacific can be.

Here is the situation

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 5.0 earthquake at 8:56 p.m. Pacific time on November 4, approximately 70 miles west of Petrolia. The offshore location is near the seismically active Mendocino region, where major tectonic plates meet. USGS event solutions can be revised as more seismic data are analyzed.

The bigger picture

Residents should rely on USGS updates and local emergency officials for felt reports, aftershock guidance and any coastal alerts. A magnitude alone does not establish that serious damage occurred.

What happens next

The question now is whether the offshore jolt remains an isolated event or becomes part of a larger sequence. Either way, the Mendocino region deserves close attention. Tex will keep you updated on this story right here at Texas News Studio.
