Texas Voters Raise Power and Water Concerns as Data Centers Expand
Original editorial illustration by Texas News Studio; not a photograph of the reported event.A University of Houston Hobby School survey reported by the Houston Chronicle found widespread concern among likely Texas voters about the electricity and water demands of data centers.
More than four in five respondents expressed concern about effects on electricity costs, water supplies and outages, according to the report. Those views do not establish that any specific facility has caused an outage or increased a particular household bill.
Data center operators need reliable electricity, cooling capacity and infrastructure connections. Local communities, meanwhile, are weighing construction activity and possible tax revenue against resource consumption and environmental questions.
The policy debate is likely to turn on project-specific data: how much electricity and water facilities actually use, who pays for infrastructure and how permitting decisions are documented.
